"In 1968, a piercing guitar tone came through the speakers on the Beatles “Revolution 1.” This is one of the most famous uses of plugging a guitar straight into a mixing console and creating the tone now referred to as “Direct-In Distortion."" That tone is one of the most recognizable and unique guitar tones of the last 60 years and was one of the inspirations for the JHS Colour Box that JHS released in May of 2014. JHS sought to recreate that same compressed bite and fuzz that you get when plugging directly into a British-style preamp but in a compact pedal. What they came up with was something even more than they imagined, and the Colour Box has become a staple among many producers, guitar players and multi-instrumentalists worldwide. Many players over the last few years have expressed their interest in a unit that is like the Colour Box, but more streamlined for the one basic application of a dirt box. No XLR function, no 3-band EQ… Just the dirt in an easy to use format for guitarists… So JHS decided to pull the Crayon out of the Colour Box. The Crayon's controls are Master, Pre, Tilt and Hi Pass. Master is your classic volume control that controls the overall output. Pre works as a drive or fuzz control like turning up the pre-volume on a preamp to send it in to overdrive. As you reach 75% and above, the fuzz will begin to gate out as you pick the strings harder when playing, it is very responsive to your input signal and touch. The Tilt acts as an active tone control that is flat when the knob is at 50%. When turned to the left, the Tilt control boosts bass and simultaneously cuts treble. When turned to the right, it boosts treble and cuts bass. This allows for some very unique and usable adjustments to the overall feel of the Crayon. The Hi Pass toggle switch lets you activate from two different frequencies located on the side of the pedal, 200Hz and 750Hz. These settings let only the high-band frequencies above them pass, and this allows for some amazing tone-shaping possibilities. The Crayon excels at Direct-In fuzz tones, but it truly covers more ground than you would first imagine. From subtle tube-like overdrive to classic rock distortion and all the way to spitting fuzz, the Crayon is much more than a one-trick pony. The Depths is optimized for use with all kinds of instruments, pickups, and to play well with dirt, so nobody’s left waiting on shore. If it’s got a 1/4” output, plug it in and get deep! In addition to the classic vibe controls, the Depths features unique controls for “Voice” and “Throb.” The “Voice” control adjusts the midrange focus of the Depths, which is perfect for tailoring the effect to your particular instrument. Clockwise, you’ll hear a fuller sound with a low-end focus. Counter-clockwise, you’ll hear a thinner, spikier sound with a forward upper-midrange bite. The “Throb” knob adds a hefty subharmonic low-end pulse to the vibrato signal, which is especially useful on synthesizers and the bass guitar. It sounds great with a little bit of dirt on the neck pickup of a guitar, too! This works best with the “Voice” turned counter-clockwise for a warmer tone. The Depths’ “Intensity” and “Rate” controls are dialed in to give you the classic optical vibe sound at more modest settings, but dive in deeper and you’ll find anything from a smooth ultra-slow warble to sharp, speedy bursts! In early 1984, BOSS released two strange devices under the name, “The Pocket Series”. One of those devices was the FA-1 FET Preamp and it quickly found its rightful place among the legends of tone when The Edge of U2 used it on the recording of “Unforgettable Fire” as well as placing it in his following touring rigs. The Clover Preamp/Boost is JHS' faithful interpretation of the FA-1 but with several additional features that make this amazing circuit even better. You won’t want to be without your lucky tone-shaper at any gig! The Clover has four standard controls and one rotary switch on the top. The Volume control allows you to set your volume at unity or as a boost to push your amp or dirt pedals. There are three EQ controls to give you tons of control to cut or boost Bass, Mids, and Treble. The rotary switch has three settings: Full EQ, No Mid, and No EQ. When set to Full EQ all three EQ controls are in operation, giving you full control over the full range of EQ available. The No Mid setting is an exact replica of the original FA-1, removing the ability to control the Mids and leaving them in a fixed setting. When in the No EQ mode all the EQ settings are removed and the Clover becomes a straight FET boost, perfect for pushing an amp. On the right side of the pedal there is a Low Cut dip switch. This removes some of the lows if you feel your tone is too muddy and can help you cut through a mix. In addition to the standard 1/4” input and output, the Clover has an XLR output for using as an acoustic or bass preamp. These can be used individually or simultaneously if you want to go to a sound board or interface as well as an amplifier. The XLR output was designed with acoustic and bass players in mind as the Clover is a wonderful preamp that gives you a great amount of control over your sound. There is also a ground lift if you experience some hum when using the XLR output. The Clover is an end all preamplifier / boost circuit for any electric, acoustic, or bass player. The EQ is simple, powerful and doesn’t allow a bad sound. No matter what style of music you play or amp that you use, the Clover will prove to be an indispensable tool. Therefore, they are directly suited to bass guitars. The Keeley Bassist Limiting Amplifier pedal is both musical and very transparent. Where Keeley's older compressors were based on the CA3080 or the LM13700, and are perfect for single-coil guitars, the new Keeley Bassist Compressor has no problems with active preamps and line-level input signals. Not only can the Keeley Bassist handle astonishingly large signals, it has an incredible bandwidth of over 20kHz and incredibly low noise. No detail in your bass guitar's tone will be lost. The Keeley Bassist will be a sound investment in your tone, you now have rackmount quality at your feet. Compression and ThresholdWhen bass players use the Keeley Bassist Limiting Amplifier, they will be greeted with a sound that is more easily amplified and heard. Using the effect as a limiting amplifier saves your speakers from clipping and distortion. Set the Threshold to look for peaks in your signal and limit distortion from your amplifier or damage to your speakers. Simply watch the Threshold Indicator light to see what type of playing you want to limit, it's that easy. Next, set the Compression Ratio Control to determine how much squash you want when the signal is above Threshold. Set Compression all of the way down for no (1:1) compression and use the Gain control as a boost. Set Compression all of the way up for an above-Threshold hard-knee limiter. A typical soft compressor setting would be 2:1 above threshold. A good starting ratio for the Compression control may be 4:1 as it generally sounds good with bass guitar. A ratio of 5:1 or 6:1 will sound great for slap or funk-style playing. For synth-bass try 10:1 Compression. Attack and ReleaseThere is a certain figure that just sounds good as far as compression goes; and that's 125dB/second. With feed forward compressors that use this type of true-RMS detector, you use a single-time constant parameter. The timing capacitor gives you attack and release times that are adaptive to your playing level or the signal input to the compressor. Bottom line: Attack and Release times vary on program content. Attack times are generally speaking, about 100 times faster than release times. "In 1968, a piercing guitar tone came through the speakers on the Beatles “Revolution 1.” This is one of the most famous uses of plugging a guitar straight into a mixing console and creating the tone now referred to as “Direct-In Distortion."" That tone is one of the most recognizable and unique guitar tones of the last 60 years and was one of the inspirations for the JHS Colour Box that JHS released in May of 2014. JHS sought to recreate that same compressed bite and fuzz that you get when plugging directly into a British-style preamp but in a compact pedal. What they came up with was something even more than they imagined, and the Colour Box has become a staple among many producers, guitar players and multi-instrumentalists worldwide. Many players over the last few years have expressed their interest in a unit that is like the Colour Box, but more streamlined for the one basic application of a dirt box. No XLR function, no 3-band EQ… Just the dirt in an easy to use format for guitarists… So JHS decided to pull the Crayon out of the Colour Box. The Crayon's controls are Master, Pre, Tilt and Hi Pass. Master is your classic volume control that controls the overall output. Pre works as a drive or fuzz control like turning up the pre-volume on a preamp to send it in to overdrive. As you reach 75% and above, the fuzz will begin to gate out as you pick the strings harder when playing, it is very responsive to your input signal and touch. The Tilt acts as an active tone control that is flat when the knob is at 50%. When turned to the left, the Tilt control boosts bass and simultaneously cuts treble. When turned to the right, it boosts treble and cuts bass. This allows for some very unique and usable adjustments to the overall feel of the Crayon. The Hi Pass toggle switch lets you activate from two different frequencies located on the side of the pedal, 200Hz and 750Hz. These settings let only the high-band frequencies above them pass, and this allows for some amazing tone-shaping possibilities. The Crayon excels at Direct-In fuzz tones, but it truly covers more ground than you would first imagine. From subtle tube-like overdrive to classic rock distortion and all the way to spitting fuzz, the Crayon is much more than a one-trick pony. The Crayon also cleans up with your guitar's volume better than any other drive we make. It is exceptional for the player who want to access multiple dirt tones with the controls of their guitar. The Depths is optimized for use with all kinds of instruments, pickups, and to play well with dirt, so nobody’s left waiting on shore. If it’s got a 1/4” output, plug it in and get deep! In addition to the classic vibe controls, the Depths features unique controls for “Voice” and “Throb.” The “Voice” control adjusts the midrange focus of the Depths, which is perfect for tailoring the effect to your particular instrument. Clockwise, you’ll hear a fuller sound with a low-end focus. Counter-clockwise, you’ll hear a thinner, spikier sound with a forward upper-midrange bite. The “Throb” knob adds a hefty subharmonic low-end pulse to the vibrato signal, which is especially useful on synthesizers and the bass guitar. Works best when the “Voice” is set to a warmer tone. Intensity: This controls how subtle or intense the overall effect is. Counter clockwise from noon are the more subtle, classic sounds. Clockwise from noon are the more drastic and intense sounds. Rate: Controls the speed of the effect. Counterclockwise for slow, clockwise for fast. Level: Controls the volume of the effect. In early 1984, BOSS released two strange devices under the name, “The Pocket Series”. One of those devices was the FA-1 FET Preamp and it quickly found its rightful place among the legends of tone when The Edge of U2 used it on the recording of “Unforgettable Fire” as well as placing it in his following touring rigs. The Clover Preamp/Boost is JHS' faithful interpretation of the FA-1 but with several additional features that make this amazing circuit even better. You won’t want to be without your lucky tone-shaper at any gig! The Clover has four standard controls and one rotary switch on the top. The Volume control allows you to set your volume at unity or as a boost to push your amp or dirt pedals. There are three EQ controls to give you tons of control to cut or boost Bass, Mids, and Treble. The rotary switch has three settings: Full EQ, No Mid, and No EQ. When set to Full EQ all three EQ controls are in operation, giving you full control over the full range of EQ available. The No Mid setting is an exact replica of the original FA-1, removing the ability to control the Mids and leaving them in a fixed setting. When in the No EQ mode all the EQ settings are removed and the Clover becomes a straight FET boost, perfect for pushing an amp. On the right side of the pedal there is a Low Cut dip switch. This removes some of the lows if you feel your tone is too muddy and can help you cut through a mix. In addition to the standard 1/4” input and output, the Clover has an XLR output for using as an acoustic or bass preamp. These can be used individually or simultaneously if you want to go to a sound board or interface as well as an amplifier. The XLR output was designed with acoustic and bass players in mind as the Clover is a wonderful preamp that gives you a great amount of control over your sound. There is also a ground lift if you experience some hum when using the XLR output. The Clover is an end all preamplifier / boost circuit for any electric, acoustic, or bass player. The EQ is simple, powerful and doesn’t allow a bad sound. No matter what style of music you play or amp that you use, the Clover will prove to be an indispensable tool. While the Clover excels at being a preamp / boost for dirt pedals, the magic is in pushing your tube amplifier into natural overdrive. The EQ lets you hit the exact spot that your amp is naturally prone to give in at. Push your small wattage amp into natural rich overdrive and distortion or find sounds in your larger more powerful wattage amp that you have never heard before. Strat and Tele players can use the Clover to create extra punch, depth and dynamics that single coil pickups can’t normally achieve, while Les Paul and humbucker players can find clarity, bite and definition galore!
